Day three in Mérida wasn´t as exciting as the first two, but still very nice. We drove 1 hour from Mérida´s center to a salt farm, where they “cultivate” the salt in rectangular lakes, some of which are pink.
This salt farm was flooded in 2007 by Hurricane Lorenzo. The people that work there weren´t able to save it until 2017, ten years later. Now they are producing salt again.
We first thought we were going to a big pink lake we had seen in pictures, but it turns out we mistook the location of said lake and ended up in these other ones, that are more numerous but far tinier. The salt is left to accumulate itself at the shores of the rectangular lakes, then piled up beside them to dry and become white and be ready to be processed and sold.
We looked around, flew the drone, took some nice pictures and bought some bags of salt, then left to find a beach in Progreso, a port, that happened to be near us. We found ourselves a nice spot and settled in one of the restaurants with tables on the beach we saw there. While my boyfriend enjoyed a very nice looking fish, I ate guacamole (mashed avocado with tomato, onion and chile) and totopos (fried tortillas in triangular shape), because I´m a vegetarian.
It was very windy on the beach, so the whole time we had to be careful that none of our things flew away. I actually enjoyed the wind, since it was a nice change from the suffocating heat. The locals told us the wind had started the day before because of a current that had come from the north, so don´t worry if you go there, it shouldn´t be as windy as it was with us, unless of course you catch one of those currents too 😉.
We swam in the sea and were entertained by the waves, that didn´t let us rest unless we wanted to end up mashed against the pier, that was to the far left.
Although the day didn´t went as we had planned it, we still had fun and enjoyed it. Always be open to changes and spontaneity if things don´t go exactly as you had them on your schedule. If you have an open mind you can still have a great day and find other exciting things to see and do.
