I´ve always been a huge fan of animals, especially if they have rare colors. On our fourth day in Mérida, we had the opportunity to go see a beautiful bird, which I will hope everybody agrees with: flamingos.
We drove to Celestún, to where they take you on a tour to see the flamingos. A boat costs 1800.So the more people you bring, the cheaper for each one of you. The boats are for 10 people, but if you are less it`s fine, you can rent it anyway.
We made sure to research, which day and at what hour the tide was low, because flamingos fly to the lake when the water is shallow to eat. The shallower the water, the more flamingos you will see.
The tour includes the flamingos and a fresh natural pool with crystal clear water in the middle of the flamingo-lake. We asked our guide to spend more time with the flamingos and less in the pool. He drove us farther away than the tourists normally are. They usually stop when they see the first flamingos, but we went on to a place where there were even more flamingos and no tourists.
I honestly don´t know how much time we spent watching the flamingos and taking pictures of them. It was my first time with these beautiful birds and no matter how many times I saw them take flight, each one was amazing all over again.
Contrary to what I first thought when my boyfriend told me we were going to see flamingos, the water isn´t pink. My bad for not doing research. But luckily for me, the flamingos were so pink, it didn´t matter that the water wasn´t, it made them pop up.
The natural pool was our next stop. If you come here, bring a swimsuit. I asked my boyfriend if we had to bring one since I heard the guide say something about clean and fresh water, my boyfriend said no. Lesson learned, next time I will ask the guide. We had the swimsuits in our car.
It was really hot and the water looked very appealing. We sat there with our feet in the water, watching the little fish swimming around, until the mosquitos were to much and we went back to the boat so we could head back.
Already back on the dock we had still plenty of the day ahead of us. Since we were near the beach we decided to go there. We googled a place near us, were we could swim, drove there and spent the rest of the afternoon in the water and sun, before driving back to the center.
