My aunt lives in the little city of Zug, Switzerland and although I´ve been there several times, I´ve never had the time to see the city, because of imidiatly heading elsewhere on family vacations.
This year, after having come back early from the stables I was staying at (more information about that here), I had some days to walk around the streets and get to know Zug. I have experienced it more as a local would, so I don´t have all the touristic places on my list, but because of that I can tell you which hidden places you should visit.
Zug is a small city located in the center of Switzerland, beside a lake, it´s mostly made up of apartments and houses, but it still its charm.
The first thing to see is the Altstadt, with its old style buildings and a little fountain. The main entrance is marked by a white and blue tower with a clock. After that there are some cafés, little shops, a fountain and a hidden way to the badi (a place where you can go swim in the lake, where they also have food and a lifesaver). If you enter through the arch below the blue tower, you have to turn right and then left, keep going until you reach a fountain and turn right through a little passage. To the badi it´s to the left, keep walking until you reach a big patch of grass and you will see the trampoline, changing rooms and snack-store. On summers it tends to get a little bit overcrowded, so if you don´t like to be smashed between people stop before getting to the badi, there are little patches of grass where you can lie down and get to the water.
For the next tip you´ll need a bicycle. You have to take the main street towards the Altstadt, but instead of entering, ride on. The street gives way to a little highway that leads to another badi, called Tellenörtli, one with a big tree. There you can also enjoy the lake or keep on riding. Turn left, just between a little parking lot and a little gas station. Ride up and then right, then first street to the left. You´ll pass under a walkway and will turn left. You should be riding beside a field with cherry trees. A little bit further on the left you can see the lake across a vineyard. Follow this way back to Zug, it´s a beautiful road for a stroll.
In Zug there is also the Burg, a museum where you can get a glimpse at how the rooms of the house of important families were furnished back in the 1300´s. If you, on the other hand, are fonder of nature and sightseeing, you can head to the Postplatz. Keep climbing until you can turn left and go through a little park to a sightseeing point with a bench under a tree. The best time of the day to go there is at sunset. The sky illuminates in pink and gold and gives an amazing spectacle.
Although Zug is tiny and not very touristy, it has it´s charms and is worth spending at least a day at.
